Air Canada Aeroplan is changing come November. Details to follow. But one positive change that is coming to the program is the addition of an Aeroplan family pool.
Normally, I wouldn’t necessarily get my family members loyalty program accounts unless we were flying on the airline. We haven’t flown Air Canada as a family so my kids are not members.

However, the new family pooling coupled with a new offer, led me to get all three of my kids Aeroplan accounts.
The offer is to join and get 2500 bonus miles when you earn your first mile by September 30th. CLICK HERE FOR THE OFFER
Now many of you may be wondering how my kids will be able to “earn their first mile” to get the 2,500 bonus, especially when we are not flying Air Canada anytime soon and certainly not before September 30th. Well “earn” just means accumulate and “accumulating” can be accomplished via an Aeroplan shopping portal or a transfer in from a flexible loyalty program.
Know that both your American Express Membership Rewards and your Capital One Miles can be transferred to your Aeroplan account. Amex points transfer at 1:1 so 1000 Amex points yield 1,000 Aeroplan Miles. Cap One Miles transfer at 1:3/4 so 1000 Cap One miles yield 750 Aeroplan Miles.
Any transfer in will qualify as an accumulation and I did a transfer with my American Express Membership Rewards points. I transferred 1,000 Amex points to each of my kid’s new Aeroplan accounts. They now await the 2500 bonus miles. And each account can add those miles to the future family pool. Our pool will start with 10,500 miles (the 3k I transferred plus the 2500 bonus miles per kid).
Note, you can only transfer Amex points to those people who are additional cardholders on your Amex card (your Membership Rewards one). And they will have needed to be additional cardholders for at least 90 days.
Not sure when we will be flying Air Canada, but I couldn’t let 7500 miles slip by for a mere 10 minutes of work.
