IMG_3414Our Uber driver laughed when he overheard our plan to get to the first and original location of Voodoo Doughnut at 7am to beat the line.  He laughed not because of the early hour, but instead because of the line that would most definitely welcome us at that time in the morning.  We went at 6am, there was no line.

IMG_3412Voodoo Doughnut sells, you got it, doughnuts.  It seems to be a “must” in Portland and despite the fact there is a sister location in Portland, to me, the original location on SW 3rd Avenue was the only option.

The Voodoo doughnuts have creative designs and some very fitting names.  The Loop doughnut has Fruit Loops on top.  The Marshall Mathers Doughnut has vanilla frosting and mini M & M’s.  The Old Dirty Bastard doughnut has chocolate frosting, Oreo’s and peanut butter!

Note the Cock-N-Balls in the box.

Um, the Cock-N-Balls doughnut is just as the name implies.  It is a cock-n-balls shaped doughnut triple filled with Bavarian cream and topped with chocolate frosting.  My friends and I had a lot of fun with that one.  :-).

The donut that seemed to come out on top with my group was the Bacon Maple Bar doughnut which has maple frosting and bacon on top!  I wish my son, Daniel, had been here to try that one.

Look at the iconic pink boxes. You see tons of people on the Portland streets carrying these.

Right now there are five Voodoo Doughnut’s currently in the USA, and one in Taipei City, Taiwan.  There are 2 Portland locations, one in Eugene, OR, a shop in Austin, TX and one in Denver, CO.  All stores are open 24 hours 7 days a week.  Unfortunately, the shops are cash only, so you cannot earn any spending rewards at Voodoo.  🙁

I think we look pretty good for 6am!

If visiting a shop is in your travel itinerary, I would suggest having a strategy to beat the crowds.  We actually had to IMG_3631go back later in the day to exchange Rob’s T-Shirt for a larger size (Rob, I told you so!).  The line at noon was about an hour!

A huge shout out to CINDY GREENSTEIN, aka The Points Mom, for helping me book our flights to Greece using points. Money wise it would have cost $12k. I learned so much from her! Contact her. You will not be disappointed.
