Avoid This Amex Saks Benefit Mistake: A Cautionary Tale

As someone who helps others navigate the ins and outs of credit card benefits, I wanted to share a recent experience that highlights why timing is everything when it comes to maximizing your perks. One of my clients encountered an issue with the American Express Saks Fifth Avenue benefit, and it serves as a good reminder for everyone to plan ahead.

The Situation

The American Express Platinum Card offers a $50 credit for Saks Fifth Avenue purchases every six months: one in the first half of the year (January–June) and another in the second half (July–December). My client made their second-half 2024 Saks purchase on December 31, thinking it would count toward that period’s credit.

Unfortunately, the purchase didn’t post until January 2, 2025. As a result, it was applied to the first-half 2025 benefit instead of the intended second-half 2024 credit. This left my client without the opportunity to use their second-half 2024 credit.

The Resolution Attempt

My client reached out to Amex customer service through chat to request an adjustment. The initial response was disappointing: they were told a correction was “impossible.”

Undeterred, they tried again a few days later. The second representative couldn’t locate a record of the first chat and was initially unhelpful. After some persistence, Amex agreed to put in a request for a courtesy credit.

The outcome? Amex eventually granted a $50 billing adjustment. While it’s great that this story had a happy ending, it’s not something anyone would want to repeat.

The Takeaway

This experience underscores a key lesson: don’t wait until the last minute to use your Amex Saks credit. Transactions take time to process, and any delay in billing could result in your purchase being applied to the wrong period.

Tips for Avoiding This Issue:

  1. Plan Ahead: Aim to use your Saks credit well before the end of the period—ideally by mid-December for the second half of the year and by mid-June for the first half.
  2. Check Transaction Dates: Purchases don’t always post on the day you make them. Review your account to confirm when the charge is finalized.
  3. Don’t Count on Exceptions: While my client’s persistence paid off, Amex isn’t obligated to make adjustments. Save yourself the hassle by being proactive.
  4. Set Reminders: Use your calendar or a reminder app to prompt you a few weeks before the credit’s expiration date.

Final Thoughts

While Amex customer service eventually resolved the issue for my client, the process was time-consuming and avoidable. Let this be your reminder to stay ahead of deadlines and ensure you’re getting the full value from your card’s benefits. Planning ahead can save you time, stress, and potentially money.
