Be Mindful Of Your Freedom 5% Category Quarterly Spend Balance

Unknown

Posted 4/7/2015

I made a mistake (not a big one) but would like to share it in hopes someone reads this and does not make the same mistake as me.

I have been using my Chase Freedom Card for my groceries the entire first quarter of 2015, as grocery stores were a 1st quarter bonus category.  Keep in mind, you only earn the 5% cash back or 5 Chase Ultimate Rewards points on on up to $1,500 in purchases or a total of $75 cash back or 7,500 Chase Ultimate Rewards points.  (Remember, your cash back earnings can be redeemed for Chase Ultimate Rewards points if you also have the Chase Ink Plus or Chase Sapphire Preferred card.)

I thought I was being really careful about checking my statements as I did not want to go over that $1,500 grocery store spend as then I would only be earning one Ultimate Rewards pointper $ spent over the $1,500.  My plan, once I went over $1,500, was to use my new Amex Everyday Preferred card where I get 3X American Express Membership Rewards points per $ spent at supermarkets.  (Up t0 $6,000).

Well I was not careful enough.  The Chase Freedom statement breaks up the spending as follows…

+ 1% (1 Pt)/$1 earned on all purchases

+ Bonus from 1Q 5% cat: Select Grocery Strs

I kept looking at my balance on the 5% line making sure it was less than $7,500 (1,500 x 5).  However, the initial $1 and point is on the first line.  The 5% line represents the remaining 4%—this amount needs to stay below $6,000 or 1,500 X 4.  I went over the $6,000 and I earned only 1x point on these purchases.

Oh well, now I know and will not make the mistake again!  While writing this, I realized I need to keep track of my Amex Everyday grocery spend so as to make sure that does not go over $6,000!

Virgin Atlantic Miles More Friends

Virgin Atlantic has a program called Miles More Friends.  If you are a Flying Club member and you invite someone (via email) to join Flying Club you’ll both get bonus miles for the first flight they take with Virgin Atlantic.

The number of miles you and your friend earn depends on the type of ticket your friend purchases.  For example, if your friend flies Little Red (domestic ticket within the UK), you get 1,000 bonus miles and your friend gets 500.  If they fly economy, 2,000 bonus miles for you and 1,000 for your friend.  Premium Economy gives you 5,000 bonus miles and your friend 2,000 bonus miles.  The most lucrative flight…is Upper Class.  If your friend flies Upper Class, you get 10,000 bonus miles and your friend gets 3,000 miles.  I wish I had a friend like this!

Greetings From The Atlantis

We’re Here!  We arrived yesterday on our free JetBlue flights and had a seamless taxi ride and check in.  The hotel is huge.  I am leaving soon to go explore.  Last night was our one and only night without dinner reservations and we regretted not having them.  We ended up a party of 14 in Murrays Deli at 830 pm.  We were starving!!!!  Mesa Grill tonight after a day of water slides and beaches.  Can’t wait.

As expensive as this trip was, I do take some comfort in that now that Atlantis is part of the Autograph Collection and a Marriott Resort, I can earn lots of Marriott Rewards points on this stay.  And its a good thing, because we need them for Hawaii in December.

First, We will earn 10 points! per US dollar on our room rate.  And although everything here is really expensive, I feel a little better knowing that I am going to be paying for all of our incidentals here with Rob’s Chase Marriott Rewards Premier Credit Card and earning 5 Marriott Rewards points per $ spent!!!

A huge shout out to CINDY GREENSTEIN, aka The Points Mom, for helping me book our flights to Greece using points. Money wise it would have cost $12k. I learned so much from her! Contact her. You will not be disappointed.
