Why I May Choose To Let My Kids (And Mine) Hawaiian Airlines HawaiianMiles Expire

We traveled to Hawaii back in December of 2015 on Delta SkyMiles.  Although we used Barclaycard Arrival miles for our inter-island flights, these flights counted as paid fare with Hawaiian Airlines.  The flights were ones in which we were able to receive HawaiianMiles for the flights.

We each earned 528 miles for these inter-island flights which are now due to expire in June of this year.  Rob’s miles are not a problem because he ended up getting a Hawaiian Airlines World Elite MasterCard.  He actually applied for the card in flight.  However, my 528 miles as well as all of my kids’ miles are in danger of expiring at the 18 month mark.

I took a quick look to see how I could prevent these miles from expiring (I have ordered magazine subscriptions in the past from American AAdvantage), but it looks like my most feasible option would be to shop on the HawaiianMiles shopping portal.  I am currently not in the market for any merchandise and would be spending unnecessary money to keep a mere 528 miles alive in each account.  We have no plans to go to Hawaii in the near future (as much as I would love to).  If I had more miles, I may feel differently, but these are my thoughts right now.

Maybe if by June, I need to do a Kohls or Staples shop, I will make sure to use the HawaiianMiles portal and extend the expiration period, but if the miles were expiring tomorrow, I think I would let them expire.

I will give another update on what I eventually do.

A huge shout out to CINDY GREENSTEIN, aka The Points Mom, for helping me book our flights to Greece using points. Money wise it would have cost $12k. I learned so much from her! Contact her. You will not be disappointed.
