How I Got 17,000 Delta SkyMiles Back in Five Minutes Thanks to Autopilot

Yesterday, I was raving about Autopilot in my Tuesday Tip, on my Instagram stories, and on my site. And guess what? I woke up this morning to proof that it works—Autopilot just saved me 17,000 Delta SkyMiles on my upcoming flight to Venice!

Here’s Exactly What Happened

A few months ago, I booked a Delta One flight from JFK to Venice for my summer trip with my daughter. I used 318,700 Delta SkyMiles to book it because I wanted a direct business class flight, and at the time, that was my best option. At the time, I got 2.67 cents per mile for the flight, which would have cost close to $8300 with cash.

Fast forward to this morning—I wake up, check my email, and there it is: An alert from Autopilot telling me that my flight price had dropped in SkyMiles by almost 17,000 miles.

Now, I’ve canceled and rebooked mileage flights before, but I’ll be honest—I was nervous about doing it myself this time. What if the availability disappeared? What if something went wrong? So instead of risking it, I called Delta immediately.

Calling Delta: A Three Minute Hold & A Quick Fix

The hold time was only three minutes (which is a miracle in itself). A Delta agent picked up, I explained that my flight had dropped in miles, and she canceled and rebooked my exact same seat for fewer miles in just a few minutes. Boom—17,000 SkyMiles instantly back in my account! And now my cents per mile for the flight is 2.73!

Why Autopilot is a Must-Have

I’ve been telling everyone about Autopilot, and this just solidified why it’s worth having. Here’s what you need to know:

  • The Free Version tracks cash prices and lets you know when your flight drops in dollars.
  • The Premium Version that has a fee is what you need if you want alerts on award flights—which is how I got notified about this Delta SkyMiles drop.

Five Minutes of Work, 17,000 Miles Back

This was one of the easiest wins I’ve had with points and miles. If you’re booking flights with miles, I highly recommend using Autopilot’s premium version to track them. Because honestly, if I hadn’t been alerted, I wouldn’t have known—and those 17,000 miles would have been wasted.

Instead, I got them back, and now I have more miles to put toward my next trip. Five minutes of effort for a huge payoff. I’ll take that any day!

If you’re not using Autopilot yet, I highly recommend giving it a try. Please use this link to sign up.
