This January, I have an upcoming quick getaway to Chicago. With the usual expenses of flights, accommodations, and dining, it could quickly turn into a costly trip. But thanks to 28,000 American Airline Miles, I could cover our flights for much less than we would’ve spent otherwise.
For both my ticket and Rob’s, each round-trip flight from our local airport—conveniently only 20 minutes from home—to Chicago, for this flight costs $371. With two flights, we would’ve been looking at a total of $742 for airfare alone. Instead, I booked both tickets using my miles, turning those potential out-of-pocket expenses into a nearly free weekend.
Luckily, I had enough American Advantage Miles in my account to cover the low redemption as last year; I took advantage of the offer for 100K AA Miles with the Citi Executive Advantage card, which btw, I have now downgraded to a no-fee Citi card.
So, with just 28,000 American Airlines miles, which was part of a bonus I got for spending money that I would have spent anyway, I turned a $742 travel expense into a freebie.
And then I kept going. Having World Of Hyatt Globalist status, I try to book Hyatts when I can. I work hard to keep that status. So I found a 2 night stay at the Park Hyatt Chicago for 21,000 World Of Hyatt points per night, so 42k for the total stay. I booked a room with a king bed and will hopefully get an upgrade upon check in because of my status. I usually do. The cost of the stay would have been $948. So more money saved.
Whether you’re saving for a major international trip or, like me, a short domestic jaunt, miles like these are gold when used strategically. Just look at this trip to Chicago, I saved close to $2k on what will be a fabulous weekend!
