Now that you have accumulated all of these SPG points, how do you then use the points for free travel?  The options are listed below. Also read about how The Points Mom used Starpoints for free stays in London, Israel, Oahu, KauaiColorado, Whistler 1X, 2X, LA, Miami, Costa Rica, San Francisco, Monarch Beach, Boston 1X, 2X, Denver, Beaver Creek, Washington D.C., Scottsdale, Vermont 1X, 2X, New York City, Niagara Falls, Hershey Park, Disney and my best one yet, Aspen

1. Redeem Starpoints for free hotel nights

The Starwood Preferred Guest program allows you to redeem Starpoints for Free Night Awards without blackout dates or extra point charges on standard rooms–regardless of your member level. If there is a standard room available, it’s yours.  Points can be redeemed for stays at Starwood Resorts and Caesars Entertainment casinos.  Also, almost every time you book a room at a Starwood resort with Starpoints, if you book four nights, the 5th night is free!  Note, that reward nights that you use count towards SPG Elite Status.

2.  Use Cash & Points For Nights

If you don’t have enough points, consider booking with Cash + Points. Similar to when redeeming nights for points, the cash and point requirement depends on the hotel category.  You can read here about how I have booked an 8 night stay in LA using cash and points.

3. Redeem Starpoints for flights

With SPG Flights, you can redeem Starpoints to fly on more than 150 airlines, with no blackout dates even during peak periods such as holidays!  Those standard restrictions that limit most frequent-flyer awards are not an issue. Plus, you can search for airline tickets whenever you choose, even during peak periods such as holidays.

4.  Transfer Starpoints to airlines

Starwood Preferred Guests can transfer up to 79,999 of their Starpoints per transaction per program within a 24-hour period to the frequent flyer programs listed here. Plus, for every 20,000 Starpoints transferred within the same transaction, Starwood will automatically add another 5,000 Starpoints!  This means that up to 94,999 Starpoints can be transferred into your frequent flyer account. (15,000 points transferred for the first 60,000 of the 79,999).  Note, unlike some of the other programs in which you can transfer points to airlines, points transfers through SPG are not instantaneous 🙁 .

5.  Transfer Starpoints to your Amtrak Guest Rewards account

Starwood Preferred Guest members can transfer Starpoints to Amtrak Guest Rewards at a 1:1 ratio Transfers must be made in 5,000 Starpoints increments.  At the time of this post, Starpoint transfers can only be made by calling Starwood Preferred Guest.

A huge shout out to CINDY GREENSTEIN, aka The Points Mom, for helping me book our flights to Greece using points. Money wise it would have cost $12k. I learned so much from her! Contact her. You will not be disappointed.
