Last year, Rob got the Chase Hyatt Visa Card and received 2 free nights for spending $1,000 in the first 3 months. This offer is still available, you can apply for the card here. Once Rob earned the free nights, he stopped using the card.
Although we did have trouble using the free nights due to an early expiration date, we ultimately figured it out. I used a night with Jessie back in April at the Hyatt Jersey City, and am actually using a night next week at the Grand Hyatt in Denver. I actually did a lot better with the 2 night award when I held the card a few years back. I used those 2 free nights at the at the Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort and Spa.
Rob just got a bill for the $75 annual fee. Since, I never have him use the card, I did not want to pay the annual fee. He called Chase and asked them to waive the fee, they said no. Chase always says no! Unlike Citibank, Citibank always negotiates! (WAIT NOT ANYMORE) So, he canceled the card! You can read posts about canceling cards here.
One thing to note, canceling a card has a small impact on your credit score as long as other positive financial factors are in place. You can read about the effect of canceling a card on your credit score here.
If you are considering the card, you earn 3 Hyatt Gold Passport points per $1 spent at all Hyatt properties, 2 points per $1 spent at restaurants, on airline tickets purchased directly from the airline, and at car rental agencies and 1 point per $1 spent on all other purchases made with your card.
Also, you receive 1 free night every year after your cardmember anniversary at any Category 1-4 property. (I gave ours to my sister.) You pay no foreign transaction fees when you use your card on purchases made outside the United States. You get automatic Platinum status in the Hyatt Gold Passport Program, which gives you a 15% point bonus on eligible spend, complimentary in-room Internet, 72-hour room guarantee, expedited check-in and a preferred reservation line.
However, I think that this card is only worth applying for after you have another Chase Credit card or cards that yield Chase Ultimate Rewards. After all, Hyatt is already a Chase Ultimate Rewards Partner and the other cards that Chase offers like the Chase Sapphire Preferred or the Chase Freedom Card offer many of the same extra point earning ability on everyday spending and should be be the ones you use regularly.
From my experience, Chase will only approve you for one card every 6 months or so. So if you want this card but have recently gotten another Chase credit card, your application may be declined. If you still really want this card, try calling Chase at 888-609-7805 or 888-270-2127 to move some of your credit from one of your existing Chase credit cards to this new line of credit.
