Maximizing Points and Miles as a Couple Yet Keeping Status Too!

The world of points and miles becomes a lot more lucrative when you have a Player Two by your side! Whether you’re a newlywed, a couple with young kids, or empty nesters, working together can help you double your rewards, maximize bonuses, and reach your travel goals faster.

If you and your significant other (or travel buddy) want to maximize your points game, here are four ways to make the most of your partnership.

1. Double Up on Big Bonus Offers

When a credit card offers a big sign-up bonus, why not have both of you apply? This way, you can double the points and, in many cases, combine them into one rewards program for even bigger redemptions.

Not sure if you need two of the same card in the long run? No worries! After a year, when the annual fee is due, you can reevaluate—some banks allow you to downgrade to a no-fee version instead of canceling.

2. Want to Earn Even More Rewards?

Instead of both applying separately, have one person get the card first and refer Player Two. This way, you’re not only earning two welcome bonuses, but you’re also scoring the referral bonus!

That’s extra points with minimal effort—just for using a referral link!

3. Be Strategic About Additional Cardholders

It may seem easier to add your Player Two as an authorized user on your card, but that’s not always the best move. Some banks consider this when evaluating new applications, and it could count against them when applying for certain cards later on.

A better strategy? Wait until after they’ve applied for their own cards before making them an additional cardholder.

4. Get (and Keep) Your Partner on Board

A great points and miles strategy only works if both partners are on board.

To make things easier, consider labeling the cards with stickers (yes, I do this!). But let’s be honest—some partners will still use the wrong one!

Encourage your Player Two to use the right card for each purchase to maximize rewards. While earning elite status is a priority for some, it’s important to find the right balance between earning status and maximizing rewards.

If your partner insists on spending their way to status, that’s okay—we can work it into the plan!

Maximize Your Points as a Team

No matter where you are in your journey—whether you’re just starting out or looking to refine your approach—I can help you develop a personalized strategy to reach your earning and status goals as a team.

A little teamwork goes a long way in stacking rewards efficiently.

A huge shout out to CINDY GREENSTEIN, aka The Points Mom, for helping me book our flights to Greece using points. Money wise it would have cost $12k. I learned so much from her! Contact her. You will not be disappointed.
