If you don’t have time for the cumbersome Global Entry application process, another alternative is Mobil Passport. With Mobil Passport, you can use a Mobile Passport app to expedite the reentry process into the United States. The app, which is free, is authorized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) for eligible travelers to submit their passport information. The CBP website dedicates a page on the site to Mobil Passport with more details and also lists at which airports it is accepted.
There is no application process to sign up for Mobile Passport. You simply need to set up a profile via the app, including submitting your passport information. Once you land from an international flight, the app asks you the standard customs questions and creates a unique QR code for you to scan when you talk to an immigration officer. All you need is a cellular or Wi-Fi connection to get the QR code when you land—and it only takes about one minute.
I may try it on my reentry back JFK this summer upon returning home from Italy. I am very intrigued by it.
