Hopefully, you have set up frequent flier accounts for all of the members of your family on the various airlines that you fly. But, since the kids don’t have any other way of earning miles other than flying (ie-like spending on a credit card), many times their mileage balances remain too low to redeem them for a free ticket. You can always transfer some of you miles into their accounts but this is usually an expensive proposition and you need to analyze to see if doing it is worth it.
But there are sales on mileage transfer rates. Currently, US Airways is offering a discount when you transfer your Dividend Miles to another member’s account. The usual rate is about $10.00- $12.50 for every 1,000 miles transferred. Through March 25, 2015, you can save up to 30% when you share.
On a transfer of 6,000 – 25,000, you will save 20%. On a 26,000 – 50,000 mile transfer, you will save 30%.
Also, while we are speaking about your kids frequent flier accounts, it is a good time to remind you that those mileage balances usually have expiration dates. If you have no intention of transferring miles to your kids to redeem them, read here to learn how to extend those mileage expiration dates.
