Uh Oh, Citibank May Have Stopped Crediting Back Annual Fees In Exchange For Card Use

UnknownRecall that in the past, Citibank has waived my annual fee in exchange for me using it.  For example, awhile back, I negotiated an offer regarding my Citi/AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard.  Citi made me an offer in which I need to use the card for 5 purchases of $20 or more over the next 3 months.  I did this and the $95 fee was credited back to my account on the next billing cycle.

Another time, I was offered a deal through my CitiBusiness/AAdvantage Platinum Select World MasterCard.  In that deal, I needed to spend $100 on the card in over next month for them to credit back $75 of the $95 annual fee.  I reluctantly agreed and spent $100.  I decided $20 was worth it to me to keep the card, as sometimes there are good spending incentives and I had a high credit limit.

The party may be over.

This year when I received the $95 annual fee bill for my Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite MasterCard, Citi would not negotiate.  I tried really hard but their answer was a big fat NO!

I canceled the card.  This was my thought process upon canceling the card.

1.  I do not use this card.

2.  In case I want to start to accumulate American Advantage miles via a credit card, I still have other Citi AAdvantage cards like the Citi / AAdvantage Gold MasterCard and the CitiBusiness/AAdvantage Platinum Select World MasterCard.

3.  I only got this card to get the 50,000 AAdvantage miles, which I did.  Recall, Citi gave me a small credit limit of $1,000 because of my other Citi cards.  But I worked the bonus regardless.  Read about that here.

4.  I only had a small credit limit of $1,000.  This is not a credit limit that I could shift around to get other cards and thus other bonuses.  Don’t understand?  Read what I am talking about here.

Bye Bye Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite MasterCard.  Maybe we will meet again in the future.

A huge shout out to CINDY GREENSTEIN, aka The Points Mom, for helping me book our flights to Greece using points. Money wise it would have cost $12k. I learned so much from her! Contact her. You will not be disappointed.
