When It’s Actually Okay to Earn Less Than 1x Per $1 with Your Credit Card

You know I’m all about maximizing every point, every swipe, and every purchase. Earning just 1 point per dollar — or worse, less than that — feels like throwing value away. But… I’ll admit it. There are times when earning less than 1x per dollar is okay. Strategic, even.

Here are four situations where it’s totally fine — maybe even smart — to let that low-earning card out of your sock drawer.

1. When It’s Your Only Credit Card

If your wallet holds just one credit card — maybe your first card or the only one you’ve been approved for — use it. It might only earn 1x on everything, but it beats using a debit card, which earns you nothing and doesn’t build your credit. That 1x card is a stepping stone.

And when you’re ready to upgrade your points game? Ask me about better cards. Seriously. I’ve got thoughts.

2. When You’re Meeting a Sign-Up Bonus

If you just opened a new card with a juicy welcome bonus, you need to hit that minimum spend. Even if the card earns 1x on the category you’re using it for, the sign-up bonus is almost always worth more than any extra points you could earn elsewhere.

Don’t overthink this. The worst thing you can do is miss the bonus because you tried to game the points too hard. Get the bonus. Period.

3. When You’re Close to a Spending Incentive

Some cards offer rewards for hitting big spend thresholds — like a free hotel night, companion ticket, or bonus status. If you’re close to the finish line? Push through.

Now, to be clear: you probably shouldn’t have been spending on that card all year just to get this incentive (especially if it earns poorly), but if you’re 90% of the way there? Go get that reward.

4. When You’re Spending Toward Status

I get this one — because I do it too. Whether it’s airline status, hotel elite nights, or something else, sometimes the only way to requalify is by putting spend on a less-than-ideal card.

It might not be the most efficient way to earn points, but sometimes loyalty is worth it. Especially when status unlocks upgrades, free breakfasts, or that sweet 4pm checkout. No shame here.

Bottom Line

Yes, earning less than 1x per $1 feels wrong — but sometimes, it’s the right move. Use your cards strategically, and if you’re ever unsure, I’ll help you optimize. Just don’t be out here using a debit card, okay?

Want to level up your credit card game? I’ve got recs — just ask.

A huge shout out to CINDY GREENSTEIN, aka The Points Mom, for helping me book our flights to Greece using points. Money wise it would have cost $12k. I learned so much from her! Contact her. You will not be disappointed.
